Right now, I think the college plan is only applicable in fields where you can easily show your portfolio.
Computer Science is becoming more like graphics design or photography, in the sense that clients care more about your photography blog than your graduating institude.
But in other fields like medical/finance/accounting/law etc., it might as well be impossible become a dropout medical doctor/lawyer.
I’d be perfectly happy if my dropout surgeon could demonstrate his knowledge and experience just as a graduated surgeon could. But a person couldn’t even sell me a car without proper certifications.
